Gastrointestinal health and function is closely connected to many aspects of our overall health. Did you know we have 'microbiota' living in our intestines (in fact, all throughout our gastrointestinal tract)? Microbiota include bacteria, archaea, protists, viruses and fungi such as yeasts. The 'microbiome' is defined as the complete collection of microbiota that resides inside inside of us. And it's fascinating that the health of the microbiome is what significantly influences our health. One example of many is how microbiome health is tied to immune function, with almost 70% of our immune system also being in the gut and having bidirectional communication with the types of microbes we have!
Research has connected the microbiome to a range of health conditions including digestive issues, anxiety and depression, obesity, autoimmune conditions, inflammation, type 2 Diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, epilepsy, allergies and others.
The foods we choose to eat or not can significantly impact gut and microbiome health, especially in the long-term. Some of the key components of our food that are important for gut health include nutrients, fibre and antioxidants. Hydration is also important. Whereas those that when eaten too often are unhealthy for our gut include artificial food additives (such as preservatives and sweeteners), emulsifiers, low-fibre/nutrient foods, industrial seed oils, blood sugar-spiking foods, alcohol plus others.
Gut Ecology and Metabolic Modulation (G.E.M.M)
Amanda Moon has completed professional education to become a G.E.M.M Certified Practitioner, being trained by founder Dr Christine Houghton PhD, B.Sc.(Biochem.), Grad.Dip.Hum.Nutr., R.Nutr.
The G.E.M.M. protocol is a clinical strategy to address both acute and chronic health conditions, beginning at the Gut-Immune interface and subsequently impacting distant cells and organs within the body. Using diet and lifestyle strategies along with evidence-based nutraceuticals, G.E.M.M targets upstream cellular processes and offers our body the tools it needs to support healing and optimal function as nature intended.
Benefits of the G.E.M.M. protocol:

Benefits of the G.E.M.M. protocol:
- Optimise the health and cellular function of the epithelial cells lining the gut as well as the epithelial and endothelial cells lining the lungs, cardiovascular system and other organs
- Enhance and re-regulate gut-immune communications
- Increase your own antioxidant production
- Release of anti-inflammatory messengers
- Nourish and restore the microbiota which in turn produces gut health-promoting metabolites
- Manage dysbiosis (unfavourable imbalance of microbiota) by activating the production of the gut's antimicrobial molecules and providing food that enhances the growth of favourable microbiota
- Restoration of cellular integrity via tight junctions, which helps heal 'leaky / permeable' gut (and brain)
- Increase cellular detoxification, including of the liver
- and much more...
"I'm fascinated with how changes to the microbiome and improvements with gut health can positively influence other areas of the body and help alleviate a range of common health complaints.
Diet and lifestyle for gut health is really easy! But can be difficult to navigate in modern times because of food marketing, taste preferences and busyness. Eat lots of colourful polyphenol-rich plant foods, include enough protein and fats (including Omega-3), stay hydrated, give your gut a nice long overnight rest, avoid unnecessary snacking, PLUS ensure sufficient quality sleep and daily de-stressing time (meditation does wonders!)"
