Investigate your symptoms...

Managing Food Intolerances

It's best to work with a team of healthcare practitioners to investigate and manage food intolerances. Some people's conditions can be really complex, just as the body and all it's biochemical processes are!  If you are looking for support from a specialised Food Intolerance Dietitian in Adelaide, for adults and children, you've come to the right place!  Not in Adelaide? Amanda also offers online consultations for other Australians and International clients.

Amanda Moon has first-hand experience with food intolerances (both naturally-occurring chemicals and artificial preservatives), including having resolved some and chronically managing others, AND has many years of experience supporting clients.  From this, she has created her THREE-STAGE Food Intolerance plan that gets personalised to you.

There are many different approaches to managing (and even resolving) food intolerances, many of which start by addressing gut health and biochemical needs.  Read more about the gut-food intolerance connection HERE.  Sometimes it takes a little experimentation to find what works for YOU.  A comprehensive understanding of your symptoms and health history is important to guide this.

Read below for some of the topics that will likely be covered in your personalised plan, according to your symptoms, age, diet, lifestyle and other relevant factors.

Amanda has years of experience educating on the RPAH Elimination Diet (aka FAILSAFE diet) since working at the RPAH Allergy Unit in 2014 and being trained in this approach.  Recommendation to trial this diet (or part of it) will depend on symptoms and severity.

Please note: If you or your child is currently on RPAH Elimination diet and yet to complete food challenges and the liberalisation process please get in touch for support to do this, as well as investigating options to address what may be causing your food intolerances.

STAGE ONE – the basics:
  • Consider when and why your symptoms commenced, including whether from infancy, post-infection, stressful event etc. and if you have a family history;
  • Ensure all basic essential tests have been completed by your doctor (or other practitioner/s) to rule out Coeliac disease, allergies, parasites, nutrient deficiencies, and H. Pylori as relevant;
  • Trial an elimination diet to see if symptoms improve. This process may include eliminating a range of the following: proteins such as gluten, whey, casein, soy, eggs or others; artificial preservatives and other commonly problematic additives; RPAH Elimination Diet (aka FAILSAFE diet – including for salicylates, amines, glutamate); FODMAPs; other foods or food chemicals such as oxalates or lectins according to your symptoms;
  • Learn how to optimise your nutrition*, including while following dietary restrictions;
  • Learn how to read food labels and what to look out for according to dietary restrictions;
  • Discuss suitability of nutritional supplements while on your elimination diet (and for long-term if indicated);
  • Learn how different exercises and timing of exercise before/after eating may impact your symptoms;
  • Understand the role of confounding environmental, physical and psychological stressors on symptoms. Where possible, be guided to make changes to your lifestyle for reduced stress on your whole body e.g. sleep habits, mindful eating practices, stress-reducing strategies, mindset, chemical exposure etc.

STAGE TWO – advanced options:
  • Learn about advanced testing options and different practitioner support to rule out, identify and guide treatment for conditions such as gut infections (e.g. SIBO, dysbiosis, yeast overgrowth), ‘leaky’/permeable gut, nutrient deficiencies, genetic polymorphisms, biochemical imbalances etc. that may be the cause of, or have come about due to, your intolerances;
  • As appropriate, be referred to your doctor and any other practitioners for treatment of gut infections (both medical and natural treatment approaches) or other issues identified in advanced tests;
  • Be guided on diet and nutrition when treating and healing gut infections and inflammatory states;
  • If suitable, learn the role of probiotic supplements and the specific strains of bacteria (and yeasts) that may help relieve symptoms and have a positive impact on gut health and the immune system;
  • Be guided on different therapeutic modalities available that may help with symptom relief and healing.

STAGE THREE – maintenance:
  • Broaden your diet as much as possible gradually over time to assess and manage your symptoms (if still present);
  • Become more in-tune to your body’s communications and how to best respond if symptoms arise;
  • Revise any diet and lifestyle habits that may negatively impact your health;
  • Learn about probiotic and prebiotic foods for good gut health and which ones will likely be tolerated according to your intolerances;
  • Ongoing education and support on optimising your diet to nourish your body for digestive function, overall energy, mood and to ultimately feel your best - including any advice needed for meal prep, cooking tips, eating out with any diet restrictions or requirements etc.
